Electric garage door - got the keys?

Posted by Kevin Readman on Friday, October 26, 2012, In : Locksmiths
Just been to a job where the customer had dropped their house keys in their car. The garage had an electric door which they had closed by pressing a button before walking out of the garage. They did not have a remote control to open the garage door from the outside as this was kept inside the and only taken out when they went out. The customer knew that there was a key operated lock on the garage door but did not know what it was for. It was a manual release for the door in case the power fai...

Are your locks up to standard?

Posted by Kevin Readman on Friday, September 21, 2012, In : Security

We were recently called out by a customer who had lost their keys. When we got to the property it was a very nice period property with a beautiful wooden door with stained glass panels. The lock keeping it closed turned out to be a 2 lever mortice lock. This did mean that getting the door open was quick. The customer agreed that they should have a new lock fitted as their insurance policy was invalid due to the lock not meeting the relevant British Standard. If your house has a wooden door th...

A day as a locksmith

Posted by Kevin Readman on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, In : Locksmiths

Working as a locksmith does keep you interested as different situations crop up all the time. Had a call about a key stuck in a lock, went and had a look at it. The lock was an Avocet ABS and the key was vertical. Customer was very apologetic when I turned the key to horizontal and pulled it out. Oh well we all have moments like that. The next call was from a lady who had lost her keys and needed to get in as she was due her insulin dose. The following call was from a take away owner who coul...

Locked out by a snib

Posted by Kevin Readman on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, In : Locksmiths

Been called out to two lockouts in the last two days where the customer had been locked out due to the snib on their nightlatch dropping down and preventing the key withdrawing the latch. The snib had dropped down when the door had been pulled closed. This happens when the mechanism becomes worn over time. This is quite a common reason for locksmiths to be called out. You can prevent it happening by ensuring the snib on your lock has to be moved upwards to engage it. Different makes of lock g...

Locksmiths can save you money

Posted by Kevin Readman on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, In : Locksmiths

Went to a job on Sunday morning to fit new locks to front and back door. When I arrived there was glass all over the inside of the conservatory and outside the conservatory door. The owner explained that they had lost their keys whilst out on Saturday night and had decided to smash the window in order to get in. Whilst I was fitting new locks to the doors a glazier arrived to replace the broken glass in the conservatory door. Quite an expensive night out altogether, although it would of been ...

Something dodgy going on.

Posted by Kevin Readman on Thursday, May 3, 2012, In : Locksmiths
I had a call from someone yesterday who asked me to come and let him into his house as he had lost his keys. When I arrived I asked if he had any proof that the lived where he claimed to. As is often the case he didn't but I said it wasn't a problem just get one of your neighbours to confirm who you are. At this point he got quite upset and said he didn't want to disturb anybody and couldn't understand why I wouldn't just open his door for him. As it was only early evening I couldn't see why...
