Windows, locks, and 'safes'.

After talking about windows last time something must be in the air as we spent all of this morning changing the hinges on 12 UPVC windows. Quite a few of them were not closing properly and as they were all the same age the customer wisely decided to do them all at once as this was cheaper than doing a few at a time. The customer also decided to upgrade their door locks to anti snap ones after hearing about the spread of lock snapping burglaries throughout Leeds and Wakefield. After this job w...

Windows - open and shut case?

Posted by Kevin Readman on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, In : UPVC

We got a call today from someone whose window would not close properly. It was a UPVC window and one of the hinges was damaged which is why it wouldn't shut. Everything worked fine after we changed both hinges (don't change just one as they have both been used the same amount so the other one will probably fail fairly soon). The window did not have any lock fitted, which is often a requirement that insurance companies insist upon in their policies. All the windows in the house now have locks ...

To stick or not to stick?

Posted by Kevin Readman on Friday, August 17, 2012, In : UPVC

Went to a customer recently whose UPVC door wouldn't open when the handles were pulled down. After I opened the door the lock seemed to be working perfectly. The problem was that the door was so low on one side that the shoot bolt at the bottom of the lock was sticking in the keep. After adjusting the door it worked fine. Window locks - do you need them?

Posted by Kevin Readman on Sunday, June 3, 2012, In : Security

Went to a job a couple where the customer had wanted locks fitted to their windows. They had called a locksmith as they were unsure which lock would be most suitable. After a discussion about the options available they decided to swap the window handles for locking handles. The reason they had called was because they had just moved in and their insurance policy stipulated that all windows must have key operated locks fitted. Do you know if all the doors and windows in your house have locks in...

UPVC doors and windows

Posted by Kevin Readman on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, In : UPVC
Been to two jobs in the last couple of days where the door or window wouldn't close and both customers thought it was the lock that was at fault. In both cases the lock was catching on the frame of the door or window and preventing it closing. However the reason this was happening was due to the door and window both having 'dropped' from their correct position. In the case of the window it required 'heel and toeing' to bring it back into line with the frame. The same was done to the door and...

New home - Is it secure?

Posted by Kevin Readman on Sunday, March 25, 2012, In : Security

On the day when you finally move into your new home the last thing you will want to think about is whether or not you are likely to become a burglary victim. Although not as exciting as decorating the living room or planning a new kitchen, ensuring your home is secure should be right at the top of your "to do" list.

Firstly you need to consider how many people have keys to your house — is it only you and your family or do other people still have keys? People who may have keys include the ...
